We are all guilty of it. What is it? Putting things down the kitchen sink drain that don’t belong.

Have you ever heard of a “fatberg”? It is a rock-like mass of waste matter found in sewers that is formed by non-biodegradable solids being flushed, things like oil and grease. These can cause severe blocks and damage to your septic system.

Fatbergs are a reason you do not want to wash your leftover bacon grease or coconut oil bits down your drain. Although they seem to slide down easily in their liquid form, they will solidify and can cause clogs and big issues.

Make it a practice to clean off any leftover bits of food into your trash can, not rinsing them down your drain. It’s best to use paper towel to wipe pans, bowls, and utensils that are covered with grease before washing them, whether by hand or dishwasher.

It’s also wise to have a good sink strainer basket. It will help catch food before it slips down your drain. You can find silicone or stainless steel ones. Both work well. The stainless steel ones will last longer and not stain like the silicone might.
