What is the best option, hand sanitizer or soap and hot water? In a way, it depends on the situation you are in. If you have no access to a sink to wash your hands, then hand sanitizer is a valid option, but it is definitely not a substitute for a thorough hand wash. Hand sanitizer is designed to kill viruses on contact, and if you rub your hands well until they are dry, it will accomplish that, but most of the time, it will not kill 100% of the harmful viruses and bacteria that are on your hands. That is where washing your hands has an advantage. When you wash your hands, you don’t just kill the bacteria, they also get rinsed off of your hands. This is much more effective than a hand sanitizer could be. Of course, carrying hand sanitizer with you is a great fallback option, but don’t neglect washing your hands.
