In the bathrooms of most homes you will find a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter or GFCI receptacle. The reason for this is that it is extremely easy to electrocute yourself in your bathroom. If you were to use a faulty hairdryer or similar appliance in your bathroom and touch your faucet, it could easily become lethal.

The GFCI receptacle functions by cutting of the power when it detects an unbalanced current. It is a fairly simple mechanism, and all that will happen when it gets tripped is that the “Reset” button will pop out. To restore power to the receptacle, all you need to do is push the button back in again. It is important to regularly test the functionality of these receptacles by pushing the “Test” button and make sure that power is cut. You will notice that it works when something that you have plugged into the receptacle turns off.
