If your family is like most, you have a lot of devices that need to be plugged in. For some living in older homes, this has caused a problem with a shortage of outlets. The quick and easy fix to this problem is to use a power strip, but there are some things to take into consideration before using these. Improper use of a power strip could pose a fire hazard.
A powerstrip is not meant for plugging in high-voltage devices such as space-heaters, dishwashers, refrigerators or similar items. These should preferably be connected directly to a wall receptacle.
Your powerstrip should be in good condition If there is any damage to it, you should discard it immediately. Don’t use it with the cord tied in knots, running under a carpet or daisy-chained with other power strips. Insert plugs completely into the strip, if any metal is showing, this is a fire risk.
Many powerstrips also function as a surge protector, but you should never assume this unless it is specifically listed as such.
