How are your gas-powered appliances lit? There always has to be some type of ignition, and in most modern appliances, this is accomplished by electronic ignition, but older appliances might still use a pilot light.
A pilot light is fed off of the gas, and this small flame is constantly burning to be available for igniting the burner when it comes on. While this might seem like a convenient setup, there are many shortcomings with it.
Of course, the wasted gas is a consideration to take. Even though this isn’t a large amount of gas that is being used, it does add up, especially considering that the flame is burning 24 hours a day year-round.
More serious are the safety concerns. While there are some safeguards in place to ensure that the gas won’t continue flowing if the light was extinguished for some reason, this is not entirely foolproof. This is why it is a good idea to air out the space before trying to reignite a pilot light that has gone out.
If possible, you should consider replacing your appliances with pilot lights with something more modern and safer.
